HEPES, or 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid is initially a substance used in cell biology to stabilise pH. Its physiological pro-desquamation properties were patented by L’Oréal Research & Innovation. By promoting the activity of proteases (enzymes which cut protein bonds between corneocytes), HEPES, like a biological peeling, helps recreate the conditions to favor good desquamation.
